Have you ever played a fighting game like Street Fighter or Tekken? Ignis is totally unlike either of them but still offers loads of competitive fun! Choose one of many powerful wizards and take part in a competition of spells! Make no mistake, this is no spelling competition. Ignis is epic, spectacular and - above all – magical!

Let's get into the details, shall we? Every character has one unique passive ability, a few spells and one ultimate incantation available to use. Wizards can launch projectiles, which serves as a basic means of damaging your opponent, or his pride at least. In case of a magical barrage, you can always hide behind a magical barrier or use a summoned familiar as cannon fodder.

6297043_151800560452_9.jpg

There are four types of spells in Ignis: The Magic of Destruction, which is pretty self explainatory. The Magic of Life restores health, creates barriers and buffs characters, The Magic of Nature allows the user to transform the terrain and to control... well, nature. Lastly, there's The Magic of Secrets, which involves curses. All four categories are very diverse on their own. For example, The Magic of Nature can be used to create defensive blocks or attack the enemy with vines or even spawn a destructive black hole.

6297043_151800561891_10.jpg

Every type of magic also has its flaws. It's super tough to battle against a skilled shaman but his cursing abilities aren't as relevant as one might think. The Magic of Secrets is a powerful force that can change the course of battle in no time but it actually needs a bit of luck to take effect on the opponent! So remember – even the mightiest foe has a weakness that can be used against him.

If you want to know more about the magical nature of Ignis, please add the game to your Steam wishlist and stay up to date with all future announcements!

Do you remember the simpler times when games were pure platforming fun, encouraging us to polish our skills by throwing gradually harder and harder obstacles at the player? We do remeber and we cherish these memories. These memories led to the creation of Haxor – a dynamic action game with Commodore 64-style graphics.

6297043_151784513112_2.png

So, if "retro" is your middle name, we're sure you’re gonna love the adventures of the courageous space explorer, Kla. Actually, hope it's not literally your middle name, cause if so, you probably had a really challenging childhood.

6297043_151784514311_3.png
The ancient Haxor race stands on the brink of extinction. Their reserves of necessary life energy are nearly gone. Facing annihilation, the people of Haxor have sent a team of researchers directly into a black hole.

What could possibly go wrong?

Now Kla, the sole survivor of the expedition, wakes up in an alien world. Of course she's got amnesia. The sole survivors always loose their memories in the most inconvenient of times.

6297043_151784526593_4.png

The thing is, maybe there's a reason why she doesn't recall her past. Sometimes remembering can be a curse.

6297043_151784527763_5.png

Are you brave enough to help Kla find her lost identity by runinng, jumping, shooting and puzzle-solving? If so, please add Haxor to your wishlist so you can stay up to date with all important announcements.

In this game there's no lion, but there are definitely witches. And a wardrobe, but not what you might expect. The upcoming retro-style jRPG The Chronicles of Nyanya is full of delicious silliness.

In a game full of cats you don't expect the theme of existential nihilism to take away the will to live and fight. But it's there, countered by friendship. The underlayer of philosophical and social commentary is light and funny, like the whole game, but worth noting. The main protagonist, Catair, is female and regularly hears sexist remarks. Black cats face discrimination for the untrue stereotype that they bring bad luck. On top of that there are numerous comments about simple workers oppressed by capitalists, priests and ghosts.

6297043_151757627643_4.png

Want to know more about the game? Add The Chronicles of Nyanya to your Steam wishlist and wait for upcoming updates.

The Chronicles of Nyanya will be released in February, 2018. The game offers up to 20 hours of gameplay & multiple endings.

Written by Michał Piwowarczyk for Fat Dog Games

Frozen District, a young Polish team currently developing Warlocks 2: God Slayers, knows how to start an indie studio
from scratch, and survive, while having fun in the process. Here’s how they did it.

Humble beginnings

The Polish indie scene is still evolving and as such, it differs from the Western European or American gaming industries where, for years, experienced developers have been leaving AAA companies to create their own titles. Thanks to a rapidly developing, yet still young, industry you’ll find more teams whose members are trying to combine the two worlds right from the start.
Frozen District is a perfect example of this trend. “I met Max Strzelecki in middle school back in 2007 and we started developing games together,” says Duszan Chaciej, Frozen District’s producer and lead designer. “At first we tried making simple browser games, something similar to the widely popular OGame at the time, and some platformers.”
Their first major title, Warlocks vs Shadows, launched in 2015 and even then they knew they needed to hone their skills in order to deliver more complex games. Max Strzelecki, the company’s lead programmer, describes the developers’ attitude towards learning, “Gathering experience and know-how between your major projects is crucial. Of course, Frozen District’s games are always the most important, but continuity of work and acquiring knowledge is also vital.”

6297043_151756740753_20.jpg

This is why Chaciej worked with Polish game companies such as Bloober Team and Huckleberry Games while Strzelecki cooperated with Knights of Unity from Wrocław. It’s all about acquiring knowledge in a country where the game development industry, despite the huge global successes of its premiere IPs, is still trying to find its place in the commercial infrastructure.
“The problem is that many experienced developers want to stay in big companies… or they move West,” explains Jakub Niewęgłowski, the team’s sound and music designer. “Naturally, big companies make games differently than indie studios, but going independent with some knowledge about the complex process of AAA development gives you a much better understanding of your work.”

6297043_151756784312_21.png

“If I wanted to offer advice to those who want to develop games, I’d have to recommend starting right away -don’t wait for anything external to make you do it,” says Chaciej. “And if you seriously want to make games, either go full time or start searching for a standard job, because after a couple of months you’ll run out of energy to do both. And this is where a publisher can help you,” Strzelecki adds.

Oldschool co-op

Working with a publisher is not only about marketing and promoting your game, however. Frozen District also values the testing aspect. “When you work on something for a long time you lose perspective. A publisher brings a fresh look into the fold,” Strzelecki says. “It’s hard to receive objective feedback without dedicated testers and the publisher can help out, provide QA and prompt new ideas.”
The feature list for Warlocks 2: God Slayers has been closed, so now Frozen District is focused on adding new content and tuning the gameplay mechanics before its Q3, 2018 launch. Fat Dog Games does not interfere with the general concept for the title, which is lighthearted fun stemming from its game mechanics and breezy atmosphere.
Warlocks 2: God Slayers is supposed to be a game that you launch into and immediately land in the middle of the gameplay without prolonged sequences or storytelling elements. Strzelecki says this is a conscious allusion to the times of cartridge games. You just start it and play it.
“The idea is to bring up memories of old games, so clearly we have to remember to set a proper difficulty level. The title simply cannot be too easy – there’s no hand-holding,” adds Strzelecki. Add to it the fact that Warlocks 2 will include a co-operative mode and you get into an additional layer of designing and testing.

6297043_151756786862_22.png

“Even from a technical perspective, it changes everything - from the implementation of each feature to the testing of 20 different configurations,” explains Chaciej. “And then you have to consider the character builds. If you add a hero with a global heal buff, he is perfect for multiplayer games, but playing him solo is a pain. Subsequently, you have to rebuild the whole concept of team play and forget about the support characters. For the most part, people will only play the game in single player mode anyway. But still, the whole concept is about jumping into the fun bits right away.”
“And what’s more fun than playing with your friends on the couch, slaying monsters and collecting new loot?” says Niewęgłowski.

6297043_151756796782_23.png

Proof of the concept

With a game so focused on delivering lighthearted fun while still providing a gameplay challenge, the ultimate test of the concept presents itself at public events. “After months of development you finally go to a gaming trade show and it’s there that you see how much enjoyment your game is providing to random people,” says Niewęgłowski. “Then you know that you are not doing all the heavy lifting only for yourself.”
“Moreover, it’s not like random people just bump into your stand by chance,” adds Strzelecki. “Some of the players take such a liking to your game they come back the next day, and then the next. This is your validation - you are doing something very right.”

6297043_151750006742_7.png

Oh, hi! You’ve probably noticed how our amazing sense of humor just got over 9000 in terms of pop cultural references in the title of this announcement. We're 90s kids, you know? Puns make us feel young and we believe there's still a bit of a rebellious teen spirit in us too. It just smells like it.

6297043_151750009072_8.jpg

Anyway, let's talk about all of the sweet inspiration from our childhood which, as expected, are having a great impact on the creative process of The Unholy Society. Our not so heroic main character has a lot in common with Jesse Custer from The Preacher. He's tough, sassy and his life is constantly driving him into tight spots and situations with no way out. The retired exorcist is also a bit of a John Constantine-type character who, even in the face of demonic threats, doesn't loose his sarcastic humor.

We never said that we were good kids who only watched Care Bears and read Donald Duck.

6297043_151750010522_9.jpg

Fans of classic horror movies will enjoy The Unholy Society as well. There are a lot of vampires, werewolves and other characters inspired by the scary films of the 30s and 40s. B-movie references galore! We’ve also hid some Lovecraftian lore in the artstyle and dialogues further down the storyline, so be sure to stay focused if you want to find all the quotes and nuances.

Oh, and did we mention Twilight? YES, THAT TWILIGHT.

Now, in case you're wondering, our game is not Pop-cultural References: The Video Game. We're trying to tell a fun, entertaining and original story and we’re pouring our hearts into it! It just so happens that they are partially made up of all the works of culture we love so much. That's why we feel the need to include them in our game.

6297043_151750038222_10.png

Maybe after experiencing The Unholy Society, you'll feel the desire to read Hellblazer or check out The Exorcist for the first time ever? That would really make us happy.

So, if you love comic books, horror movies and all the good stuff as much as we do, please add The Unholy Society to your Steam wishlist!

6297043_151748541073_10.jpgEdgar Alan Poe once said, “I became insane, with long intervals of horrible sanity". This is also the fate which falls upon us in Sand is the Soul. In the game's narrative it's known as the Sand Curse - a direct consequence of being able to organically process the Sand. It gives the accursed the ability to defy death, but it greatly affects his consciousness and psyche, making him slowly descend into madness. The more times you need to get "resurrected", the greater the impact on your sanity.

6297043_151748542993_11.jpg
Monstrous hallucinations, grotesque apparitions and gory visions await you at the end of the road when your body becomes more and more contaminated by the Sand. Moreover, the people around you are very much aware of your state. It can be recognized in your voice and gestures. That's why they will react to you differently depending on your sanity. The real question is, however, are they really there or is it only your delusion trying to make contact?

6297043_151748545223_12.jpg6297043_151748546652_13.jpg

Not only do you need to worry about slowly spiraling into insanity, but addiction to the Sand seems to be a noteworthy issue. Think of the Sand as a kind of morphine. Use it too much and your body will be struck by side effects which, in case of Sand, manifest in the form of blurred and distorted vision. Thankfully, there is a drug which can soothe your high called the Boltons Remedy. Though you cannot heal your distorted mind, the calming agents may help you stay focused or at least, more stable.

6297043_151748548871_14.jpg

Adding Sand is the Soul to your Steam wishlist will help us stay more stable and focused. And it's mutually beneficial, as you'll be up to date with any important news and announcements regarding the game!

I mean... there's really something unusual about you. Your extraordinary bravery which led you to venture into the shadows in search of Lady Death is one thing, but those weird, amazing abilities are worth mentioning. And... quite scary if I can be really honest here.

Listen kid, I know you're really desperate to help your family and friends, but those potions that you take along the way certainly can't be good for your health. True, they help you cross some paths which would seem too dangerous, but man, when you drink that stuff, you seem like you enter some kind of dreamlike state. It's really hard to communicate with you. I can't even imagine what vicious, gruesome stuff you're seeing in your mind's eye. Fortunately, it doesn't last too long and after a few seconds you come back from that alternate reality or wherever your consciousness wanders off to when those potions take effect.

6297043_151748034513_7.jpg

Wait... am I talking to you, or have you just cloned out on me? Oh, ok, it's the true you, but you just spaced out a bit. Focus kid, we don't want you to die on your way, do we? Anyway, your eau de clone, as I like to call it, may prove to be very helpful if you need to be two places at once. Sadly, the artificial you can't move or react to anything, but it works as a weight and can serve as a blockade.

6297043_151748037242_8.jpg

Don't forget you can do that magical light thing as well. As some parts of this mysterious world are cloaked in darkness, the light will help you to force your way through the deepest shadows of the night.

6297043_151748038532_9.jpg

I believe in you, kid. And remember, that though you need to Dream Alone, those powers will help you survive.

If you're brave enough to help the young explorer, please add Dream Alone to your Steam wishlist to stay up to date with further announcements.

Don’t Bite Devs studio is the child of three three proud friends - Marek, Jarek and Patryk. They work from a small office located in Legionowo, about a twenty minute ride from the center of Warsaw.

As I enter the studio, I see the typical workplace of a small developer. Several boxes lay here and there, some ideas scratched onto a flipchart, an Oculus Rift, three PCs and way too many desks.

On the screens there are wallpapers of the studio’s first game, Inner Voices. It had started as an Epic Games Jam project and, much like another Polish video game, Superhot, made it to Steam as a full release.

6297043_151730950081_IMG_20170313_162027.jpg

However, Inner Voices, released on Steam in May, 2017, wasn’t as big a success the team had been hoping for. It wasn’t a bad game, it just didn’t sell that well. Yet it did give the developers something far more valuable than money: experience and insight as to what not to do with their next game. One of the lessons they learned was that playing video games doesn’t necessarily mean you know how to make them.

“At first we thought that, being raised on video games, we wouldn’t have a problem making one ourselves,” says Marek, “and that’s the biggest trap a rookie developer can fall into. You don’t think about, you don’t even know, that there are so many aspects to game development. But they’re there, and when they come out, they punch you straight where it hurts.”

One example is the non-skippable intro in Inner Voices. The game was fun and people loved playing it, but having to wait three minutes watching the same cut-scene over and over was quite irritating.

6297043_151730953791_IMG_20171013_203044616.jpg

Time for something smaller

Their next game is Rig or Skill: PC Brawl which will hit Steam Early Access in the first quarter of 2018. The game is a small, yet fun brawler in an air hockey style with a twist: it’s a duel of virtual gaming computers whose owners compete for the PC Master title. You send your minions to destroy the key components of your opponent’s computer and drain its health, which is represented by one of the most important characteristics of PC gaming - frames per second.

You can choose your rig, do a bit of customization and then fight with either an AI or a real opponent. And even though the PC Master Race is strong with Rig or Skill, you will be able to cross-play with other gamers using the Android version.

6297043_151730958161_IMG_20170725_172703664_HDR.jpg

If it sounds simple, it is! There’s nothing wrong with simplicity. The team concluded after Inner Voices that the next project would be on a smaller scale. They want to train their skills and they actually plan to continue the Inner Voices series, which, as it turns out, is to be a 5-part saga.

A project of smaller scale does not mean fewer problems in its implementation. Despite the simple graphics, there are some problems with optimization, not to mention finding an artist capable of drawing everything in the style the developers want. You also need to properly determine the gameplay balance, which is pretty important since Rig or Skill allows for cross-platform play.

To make this possible, an appropriate online service provider was needed, and because Steam does not have such functions, the choice fell on GameSparks, which both supports the servers and handles the microtransactions.

6297043_151730967163_IMG_20171011_105808331.jpg

Don’t give up, devs

Rig or Skill: PC Brawl is to be a free-to-play game, which is a risky decision nowadays, for two main reasons. First of all, the recent controversy around loot boxes can potentially deter players, especially as Rig or Skill is a competition title. The second problem is the fact that the market, especially the mobile market, is saturated with these kinds of games.

This, in turn, puts a challenge in front of the team, as they must balance everything so that the game does not reach into our pockets too often, though at the same time earns enough to keep going.

“We plan on selling cosmetic items and nothing more,” assures Patryk. “We’ve already got quite a few skins, many of which are based on pop culture and gaming in general. However, with the exception of some limited skins, the player will be able to buy everything using in-game currency.”

That’s a good approach, the more so because it is very easy to spoil the game’s economy with excessive microtransactions or sell items that make gameplay too easy. The bigger issue is how to deal with the saturation of the mobile and the Steam markets, where in 2017 alone, more than 7,000 games were released on the latter.

Don’t Bite Devs has a simple plan for their game – be agile. It isn’t meant to be just a quickie to pull as much money out of gamers’ pockets as possible. Rig or Skill: PC Brawl will spend its first months in Steam Early Access and after leaving, the game will be consistently updated and molded to fit gamers’ needs.

What’s interesting, even if success seems a long way off, the team won’t give up. “We know of games that had had a bad start, but over time they became quite a hit,” says Marek. “The worst thing you can do is to give up too quickly.”

You need to calm down. Frank is dead and there's nothing you can do about it. Take three deep breaths, ok? One... two... three... You gonna be okay there, chum? The party ended as horribly as it could have. Sure, you both did nearly drink yourself into a coma but Frank's demise wasn't your fault. But, as I’d said before, the investigator will find you partially responsible for your reckless partying habits. Let's try to stay calm and think about what we can do about our dear, inanimate, not-quite-breathing friend.

6297043_151730871773_17.jpg

Hmm... I'm not sure how the tub is gonna work as a hiding spot but it has to do for now. We have a real bloody problem on our hands. The whole place looks like a slaughterhouse. No wonder – poor Frank cracked his cranium quite hard, which always bleeds like hell in any case.

6297043_151730874662_18.jpg6297043_151730875921_19.jpg

Let's check out what kinds of useful tools we can find around your apartment. Oh look... there's a brush, which will be great for scrubbing the furniture and walls and the mop will help you deal with the floor stains. Don't forget the soap in case the surfaces turn out to be really hard to clean. Oh man... did you notice the bloody trail leading to the bathroom? Next time be sure to pack the body to the waste bag so it won't bleed on the way to the hiding / disposal spot.

6297043_151730879982_20.jpg

You are acting like you're hiding a dead body for the first time in your life. Hah! Yeah right, of course you are! But it was fun, wasn't it? The thrill of racing against time and the puzzle-like nature of the situation - it’s kind of entertaining. Not for Frank, of course... Maybe... we could do this again… why not try to turn it into a business, what do you think? We could buy some lockpicks and some other useful tools and earn a little bit of money from unfortunate or accidental, but always lethal, situations. Hmm?

6297043_151730881853_21.jpg

So, are you in? If so, add Body of Evidence to your Steam wishlist so you can be up to date with all the important announcements about our little "start-up"!
